In our Travel Clinic we administer the meningococcal meningitis vaccine to travelers going to specific destinations which require it before issuing VISAs. Recently an outbreak at UC Santa Barbara resulted in four confirmed cases among students. A local student and Lacrosse star from La Costa Canyon High School contracted the disease and although he survived had both feet amputated at the ankle. Student dormitories, army recruit barracks, and crowded venues, such as the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca, are all high risks for the disease.
We recommend college students get the meningitis vaccine before leaving for school.
